Barton scores maiden podium in the West

Barton Mawer finished 3rd in race 2 for Round 4 of the Australian Carrera Cup Championship at Barbagallo in Perth W.A. With a new round sponsor on board in Jeminex, it was the perfect way to show the company the steady progress Barton had made and the value of being involved in Carrera Cup with races 1 and 3 being televised over the weekend on Network 7. Three excellent races saw Barton claim 4th position for round points and consolidate his lead in the Michelin rookie of the year title.

Qualifying occurred with a wet circuit which was untimely as Barton had never driven the Cup Car in the wet before.

“Well I guess I had to learn what they are like to drive in the wet at some stage! The Michelin wet weather tyres are very impressive in those difficult conditions” stated Barton.
Multiple red flags and being one of the first drivers to get the chequered flag on the rapidly drying circuit saw Barton drop from a top 10 slot to a disappointing 14th on the last lap.

Race 1 saw an incredible opening lap for Barton. A good start combined with avoiding some collided cars at turn 1 and turn 6 catapulted him to 6th at the end of the first lap. He held this position for some time until Fiore and then Washington found a way past. Crossing the line in 8th was still a good rise from his starting position.

Race 2 started in slippery conditions with the circuit still damp mainly due to the early 8:50am start. Barton again used good judgement to avoid a mix up at turn 7 on the first lap and jumped to 3rd. He had maximum pressure applied from James Moffat and with a wrongly selected gear at turn 4 on lap 12 the rear of the car slid out at let Moffat squeeze through. With Caratti retiring with mechanical problems Barton crossed the line a phenomenal 3rd!
“That was a brilliant result. To achieve a podium in only my fourth race meeting in Cup Car exceeds even our own high expectations” beamed Barton.

Race 3 was a cracker. Barton slotted into 3rd behind Baird and Moffat and followed the pair bumper to bumper. David Russell was all over the rear of the number 27 car on lap 3 and found a way past Barton with more speed into the last corner. A safety car was deployed on lap 8 and for the rest of the race he was right behind Moffat who was overtaken by Russell also. A freight train followed behind Barton, consisting of Lester, Wall and Fiore. Barton held on to finish 4th.

“That was a tough race. I could not afford to make a mistake otherwise I would have been swallowed up by the line of cars behind. I am very satisfied with our results this weekend” reflected Barton.
The TV highlights package from Barbagallo will be aired on Network 7 this Saturday 17th May at 1:30-2:00pm. The next round of the championship is at Sandown on 7-9 June
